Design No. 727

from "The Bungalow Book" by Henry Wilson (1910)

Design No. 727 shows the outlines of what would eventually become a California Ranch style home. It's easy to see in this plan where California architects in the 1930s and 40s took some of their inspiration.

The broad eaves, open terrace, and shallow roof pitch, with the brick chimney protruding are clearly bungalow elements, but with a modern twist. "Grace and lightness of line predominate in the external impression of this artistic home. The rafters and purlins penetrating the open verge board and eaves, give an original touch and show recognition of the principles of lightness in far projecting timbers or roofs."
